The Song of Rhiannon
Yesterday I read " The Song of Rhiannon " by Evangeline Walton, based ob the Third Branch of the Mabinogion. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The story is about the Vengence of the Gray Man, the friend of Gwawl who was beaten by men with spears after Rhiannon tricked him into the bag. Gwawl had tried to force Rhiannon into being his, and so Pwyll and Rhiannon beat him. So the Gray Man took vengence upon Rhiannon, her son Pryderi, his wife Kigva, and Manawyddan Fab Llyr, the son of Llyr.
Its a story of love, courage, self sacrifice, magic, and battling evil. I loved the story because I've always enjoyed the story of Rhiannon who lost her son and was wrongly accused of eating her son. Another reason is Manawyddan Fab Llyr, who is often seen as the Welsh equivelent of Manannan Mac Lir. Although arguments go back and forth, I still love the Welsh character as per he reminds me of my Lord of the Sea. There are other Gods and Goddess's spoken about within the story, including Bran the Blessed, his sister Branwen, Arianrhod, Math the Ancient, Taelisin, Cerridwen, Beli, Efnisien, and Nisien. If you've never read the story, I suggest reading it... it makes the heart sing.
